Biology News & New Books List
February 2005
Link to top Biology Library page | Link to top News page- Spring Break Hours, March 5-13, 2005:
Saturdays - Sundays closed; Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm - PubMed has had a facelift: full journal title display when you mouse-over the abbreviation; spellchecker which will suggest corrections; new tabs; "Review" filter is a default tab; MY NCBI http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/jf05/jf05_myncbi.html, including filters where you select your "tabs," and persistent "cookies" (optional) to allow you to stay signed onto your specific preferences. Check it out!
- NIH final policy on free access
to medical research was released February 3. The policy
"requests" that, beginning May 2, NIH-funded scientists submit an
electronic version of their final manuscripts, defined as the final
version accepted for journal publication, including modifications from the
peer review process, for deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) as soon as
possible, and within 12 months of final publication." More info: http://nihms.nih.gov. To ensure the
success of this new system, I encourage you to make your NIH-funded
articles available in PMC promptly. This can be accomplished in either of
two ways:
1) Publish in open-access journals that already deposit their papers in PMC and make them immediately and freely available.
2) When you publish in non-open-access journals
a) Specify (if necessary) in the publisher's copyright transfer agreement or comparable document that the author retains the right to make the article available in open-access digital repositories (NIH has suggested the following language: "Journal acknowledges that Author retains the right to provide a copy of the final manuscript to NIH upon acceptance for Journal publication or thereafter, for public archiving in PubMed Central as soon as possible after publication by Journal.") For additional information, see also Author's Addendum (from SPARC) [ http://www.arl.org/sparc/author/docs/AuthorsAddendum2_1.pdf ]
b) Deposit in PMC the manuscript plus any supporting files and indicate the desired public release date. This may mean that you will need to arrange to maintain a "final author version" of your manuscript incorporating all peer review and editorial changes. - Science Times: We've added an informal display of the Tuesday science section of the New York Times, near the WU Biology Dept. new publications display upstairs in the library. We would welcome gift additions during summers and intersessions when the free newspapers stop on campus.
- Biology Library after-hours access will be by ID card instead of key beginning sometime in March; the exact date isn't known yet. Keyholders who want to be sure their ID will work can test on the keypad now:
1) Close the door (or leave it closed if it is after hours).
2) Slide your ID through the keypad. Light will turn from Red to Green if you are authorized. Try again if it doesn't work the first time. If your ID card does not work, please bring your ID to the Biology Library and speak with Ruth, Charlotte or Ray.
3) Prop the door open again (unless you are testing after hours).
Information about what to do with your B200E keys will be distributed in the March or April News and New Books List. - Free classes from National
