Policies and Procedures When Visiting the Arc

  • Access to the Arc is restricted to current members of the Washington University community. An ID card reader will unlock the door. Visitors will need a University ID with a magnetic stripe on the back. If you have an older ID, a staff member will need to open the door for you.
  • Please respect the closing times. Plan your work so that you will be able to stop before the Arc closes in the evening.
  • No food is allowed in the Arc. Drinks are permitted in closed containers only. You will be asked to move or discard drinks that are placed where spill damage could be done to equipment.
  • Collaboration and sharing is encouraged in the Arc. Please feel free to quietly discuss your work with others. However, disruptive conversations are not allowed. Consulting rooms may be reserved by groups working on a project together that requires the use of technology in the room (computers, scanners, video viewing).
  • Arc staff are here to help you. Don't wait before asking questions. Do use their expertise to make your work easier.
  • If there is software or equipment that you want us to get, let the staff know. We will not be able to provide everything, but your requests will help keep the Arc focused on the right services.
  • If you don't know how to use something, ask before trying. This will save you time and prevent damage to the equipment.
  • In order to use the specialty scanners (high speed and high resolution), you need to complete a brief training session. This training is available on demand, time allowing, and you can request this training from the person working at the Arc's front desk.
  • Use of equipment and software must not violate the University Computer Use Policy. This includes copyright guidelines.
  • Use headphones when listening to anything with audio. Please adjust the volume so that others are not distracted. Headphones are available at the front desk.
  • Guests may tour the Arc, but may not use the equipment. If possible, please make an appointment before visiting.
  • Do not install, move or alter software or equipment without permission of the staff.
  • Some workstations are equipped with unique software or hardware. If you are not utilizing this software or hardware, you may be asked to move if someone needs to use the workstation.
