Psychology: Finding Tests and Measures

Return to Psychology: Guides

This guide identifies resources for finding tests and measures used in the field of psychology. These resources are meant to serve as a starting point. There are a variety of unpublished and published tests available for use. To view a full published test, you will most likely have to order it from a testing publisher. The library does not collect published instruments. You might also check with one of your professors or a researcher who has used the test in a recent study. Unpublished instruments will sometimes appear in the article that first mentions them. If you have any questions about using these resources or would like assistance searching for tests, please see a reference librarian at the Reference Help Desk in Olin or contact the Psychology Subject Librarian, Melissa Vetter .

For background reading about finding tests and measures in psychology, take a look at the APA's Guide for Finding Information About Psychological Tests and their Tips for Searching for Tests.

Here's a link to a list of major publishers of psychological tests:

Alternately, the Test Collection at Educational Testing Service (ETS) has a free pamphlet entitled Major U. S. Publishers of Standardized Tests, which lists the names, addresses, and phone numbers of 28 major test publishers. Call or write to them for a free copy:

Finding Tests on the Web

There are some web sites that contain psychological tests. Usually these are set up to have the user fill out a questionnaire and take the test, providing an online study group for the researcher. The tests themselves can be a useful source for your research.

  • Do not use an online test for your own work without obtaining permission from the researcher or organization who created the web site.
  • Information about reliability, validity, and related research may be lacking for online tests.

To find online tests, try:
