- Hours Oct. 2 & Oct. 19:
The Biology Library will close early, at 5 pm, on Thursday, Oct. 2. Biology buildings will be locked to non-biology folks at 3:30 pm.
The Biology Library will be closed on Sunday, October 19, because of fall break on Oct. 17. We will be open 8:30-5 on Friday Oct. 17 (Fall Break.) - We've moved!: The Biology Library collections and staff are now located on the 3rd floor of the Life Sciences Building. We have moved up in the world!! There is still some work left to complete before all the 2nd floor doors are unlocked etc. Our new front door doesn't have its card reader yet so we are still using our old front door on level 2. The south door on level 3 will be unlocked during library hours so you can take the Goldfarb Plant Growth Facility elevator (southwest corner, near Mallinckrodt Center) to level 3 for easy access. You can still take the old stairway also. Visitors welcome!
- Project Prospect (Royal Society of Chemistry): If you teach biochemical concepts, I thought you might be interested in Project Prospect which will eventually enhance biomedical/biochemical articles, 2007+, with many features, including links to more information about compounds from the IUPAC Gold Book, links to definitions of many terms, etc. Take a look at some the examples, click on the "Enhanced HTML article RSC Prospect," click on all 4 of the Highlight options on the right side and explore. Or ask Ruth next time you are in the library. WU doesn't have online access to all RSC journals but we do have most of them.
- The new Biology Research Guide was launched last month. So far there have been no comments or suggestions. Please post on that site. I would like to make it useful, especially since so many folks use the library without actually visiting us on the 3rd floor of the Life Science Building!
- In conjunction with the GIS Symposium, Nov. 19, 2008, Olin Library will host a map gallery/poster session Nov. 18-19. If you have a poster or project using GIS that you want to submit for display and competition during this time, please contact Scott Horn (935-4148). Here are the basics.
- Poster sessions will run from 2pm-5pm on the 18th and 1pm-5pm on the 19th
- Any project based on GIS is accepted (including digital projects)
- 1st and 2nd place prizes: $100 and $75 bookstore gift cards
- Printing is available for free
- Presenter needs to be available on one of the days for a couple of hours to talk about their poster/ project
- Interesting sites and publications with the theme of open access publishing
- The first Open Access Day will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2008. Events can be viewed on the web, mostly in the early evening. Speakers include Sir Richard Roberts, joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1993 for discovering split genes and RNA splicing, and Philip E. Bourne, the Founding Editor-in-Chief of PLoS Computational Biology and the author of the popular PLoS Computational Biology Ten Simple Rules Series.Their presentations can be viewed live or later in an archive. The founding partners of Open Access Day are SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), Students for FreeCulture, and the Public Library of Science

- Oxford University Press now deposits into PubMed Central for NIH-funded authors
- PubMed Central Deposit and Author Rights, by Ben Grillot; analyzing policies adopted by several 12 publishers to facilitate author compliance with the NIH policy. Kevin Smith, in his August 19th blog posting suggests this "provides a kind of template that authors should consider whenever they are confronted with the choice of publisher for their research and with a publication agreement"
- NIH-funded authors who publish in American Chemical Society journals, such as, Biochemistry, can pay $100 to have ACS deposit their manuscript in PubMed Central; ACS provides this service free to members. Authors may also submit their own manuscripts for no fee. More info
