- Great short videos made to celebrate Open Access Day, Oct. 14, 2008! The short videos at http://www.vimeo.com/oaday08 are inspirational. They include a middle school teacher, some researchers, a patient advocate, a librarian and more. More info from Open Access News
- Biology Library Nov. 25-30 (Thanksgiving) hours:
Tuesday & Wednesday 8:30am - 5:00pm
Thursday - Sunday closed - Please visit WU's new Scholarly Communications site: http://scholarlycommunications.wustl.edu. This site features many new resources, several of which I hope will expand and become more useful as you send in comments and questions. I know there are plans to enhance the Authors and Copyright section with answers to FAQs. The Author Addenda section includes a new interactive WU Author Addendum form ; even if you don't want to use that form, it offers language and options which you may want to consider the next time you transfer some of your rights to your publisher. "Copyright & Publishing" on the library homepage links to the Scholarly Communications site.
- Google Books news: Google, the Authors Guild, and the Association of American Publishers announced Oct. 28th that they had settled their longstanding legal battle over Google’s mass scanning of books. Under the terms of the deal, Google will pay $125-million to establish a Book Rights Registry, to compensate authors and publishers whose copyrighted books have already been scanned, and to cover legal costs. It isn't clear yet what this will mean to WU users. I expect we will be hearing a lot more on this story. Here are a few comments already:

Peter Suber on Open Access news - Access to Becker Medical Library: Beginning Nov.1, a WU ID is required for access to Becker Medical Library after 6 pm and on weekends. More info.
- Who is Citing Your Work? I found this presentation by Cathy Sarli, from Becker Medical Library, very worthwhile, even with the caution that Scopus which is one of the major tools covered, is not available to us at the WU Danforth Campus. It still includes some nice tips on searching Google Scholar and Web of Science. For more information and a link to the PowerPoint slides see http://beckerinfo.net/scp/2008/10/10/who-is-citing-your-work/. I also recently discovered that Cited Reference (or cited author) searching is a feature in some Ebscohost databases, for biofolk that would include Academic Search Premier and PsycInfo.
- Challenging current science publishing: Why current publication practices may distort science PLoS Med 5(10): e201. doi:10.1371/journal.pmed.0050201 "The current system of publication in biomedical research provides a distorted view of the reality of scientific data that are generated in the laboratory and clinic. This system can be studied by applying principles from the field of economics. The “winner's curse,” a more general statement of publication bias, suggests that the small proportion of results chosen for publication are unrepresentative of scientists' repeated samplings of the real world." I think the paper asks more questions than it answers but certainly worth reading. [I was alerted to this article from Escience News.]
