• ITeach Jan. 14, 2010: I would like to invite you to attend the biannual ITeach faculty-development symposium. The theme of ITeach 2010 is "Conversations on Teaching." It will be held on January 14, 2010, from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Seigle Hall, on the Danforth Campus. ITeach 2010 will be a great opportunity to learn about innovative and effective teaching strategies that have been developed here at Washington University. The biannual symposium includes a plenary discussion and 16 concurrent sessions, as well as breakfast, lunch, and a concluding reception. ITeach is coordinated by the Teaching and Technology Partnership (Arts & Sciences, The Teaching Center, and University Libraries).       - University Public-Access Mandates Are Good for Science, by David Shulenburger in PloS Biology; nice short summary about a growing trend at research universities.
      - Alliance for Taxpayer Access, Nobel Prize-winning scientists urge Congress to act to ensure free online access to federally funded research results, press release, November 10, 2009.
      - Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age (National Academies Press book, Nov. 2009) There's a 10 minute podcast about this study also. Recommendations are available in the executive summary.
• Cell pilots new research tool: The ‘Reflect’ tool identifies the proteins, genes and small molecules mentioned in the Cell articles, and generates pop-up windows containing relevant contextual information, with additional links, about those entities. Reflect versions of articles are available in the Nov. 12, 2009 issue of Cell on the cell.com site. Note: these are not available on the sciencedirect.com site. This is reminiscent of Nextbio (ScienceDirect) and Project Prospect (RSC) efforts to increase usefulness of online journal articles.
• Best Science Books lists: Near the end of each year, many publications have best books lists. The Confessions of a Science Librarian is once again collecting these at http://scienceblogs.com/confessions/best_science_books_2009/. Check back a few more times this year and early in 2010 to get more compilations.
