- New library staff: There's a new face in the Biology Library. Chris Goodman will be working primarily at the math library but you will see him in biology sometimes also. Ruth, Charlotte and Chris hope you will ask us about library resources and services or whenever you have a question we may be able to help with.
- The Spring 2008 issue of Off the Shelf is now available on the library web site. The article beginning on p.4, "Open or Shut, the Question of Public Access," is being widely cited as a great introduction to public access issues. In addition it includes interviews with our own Sally Elgin and Erik Herzog (and a picture of your librarian, too!) Extra paper copies of this issue are available in the library.
- Save the Date: The annual new faculty/new graduate student orientation and reception at Olin Library will be Tuesday, August 26, 3-5 pm. More details will be available later.
- Online-only access 2009+? We propose to cancel our print subscriptions to these titles and have online-only access 2009+. Quite a lot of money will be saved by this and then available to support new subscriptions, backfile purchases, etc.
This group would continue to be available from BioOne; most of these titles are also available in JSTOR:

- Wish list for biology library collection. If there are no objections and we proceed with the proposed conversions to online-only, how should we spend the saved money? I have a few ideas which I will be prioritizing with the help of the Biology Collection Advisory Group (Kathy Miller, John Chase, John Orrock, Paul Stein, Craig Pikaard, Ram Dixit). If there are journals or databases that are needed for your research or teaching, please send the information to Ruth Lewis now and as they arise in the future. Thanks!
- New Library Website Design! A new library homepage and site design are now in place. Have comments? Please use this form and choose 'Library Web site' from the drop-down list for the subject line of your message. What do you think?
- Does reading online instead of paper affect how you do research?: Electronic Publication and the Narrowing of Science and Scholarship, by James A. Evans. Science 18 July 2008:Vol. 321. no. 5887, pp. 395 - 399 DOI: 10.1126/science.1150473 "...By drawing researchers through unrelated articles, print browsing and perusal may have facilitated broader comparisons and led researchers into the past. Modern graduate education parallels this shift in publication—shorter in years, more specialized in scope..." See also in the same issue: SOCIOLOGY:Survey Finds Citations Growing Narrower as Journals Move Online, by Jennifer Couzin. "Millions of scholarly articles have migrated online in recent years, making trips to library stacks mostly obsolete. How has this affected research...?"
- "150 Years of Plant Science", a display which has been in the library since the university sesquicentennial, has a new home outside of McDonnell 262.
- Publishers continue to respond to the NIH Public Access Policy:
Nature Publishing Group launches Manuscript Deposition Service
Document Deposit Procedures for APA Journals There was much furor over an initial policy from the American Psychological Association Journals which said that the author's university would be billed $2,500 per manuscript to have the author-version submitted to PubMed Central.
