Proxy Server Login for Off-Campus Access to many resources below

  • Physical changes around the Biology Library: The Biology Library entrance is now on 3rd floor Life Sciences Building. The card reader for afterhours access is now at a different door, on the 3rd level.
-- Access to the "library commons" -- study area, workstations and printer -- on the 2nd floor is available whenever you can get into the buildings. Access via the 2nd floor Rebstock-Plant Growth Facility corridor may occasionally be closed to some folks, but the stairway access from the 1st floor Plant Growth Facilty entry (directly across from the Natural Sciences Learning Center) will always be open.
-- The Life Science 202 conference room should now be available for special uses on weekends and evenings, even when the library is not open. Contact the Biology Department Office as usual to schedule that space.
-- The "old" library card reader door (2nd floor Rebstock) will be open longer hours than the library. That door may be closed but it will be unlocked so you can come in! When it is locked, it will open to all who have afterhours biology building access.
-- The 2nd floor corridor door to the growth chambers will be open during daytime hours. Soon, after lock change, the greenhouse key will open it afterhours.
-- Lastly, the 3rd floor corridor door from Life Sciences Building to Plant Growth Facility should always be open so you can take the Plant Growth Facility elevator to the 3rd floor for easiest access to the new library entrance.
-- Some details are still being worked out so some of this info may change in the coming weeks.
  • Please report E-Journal access problems promptly! This is the time of year when we lose our online access to a few titles; which titles is unpredictable of course. The sooner we can report these issues the sooner they can be resolved. To report problems, please just email Ruth or you can use the EJ problem report form if you prefer. Thank you.
  • Best Science Books 2008: Many publications have best books lists this time of the year. John Dupuis in his blog, Confessions of a Science Librarian, collects these lists each year and highlights which, if any, science books are selected. These posts can be read at http://jdupuis.blogspot.com/search/label/bestsciencebooks2008. Another interesting source of end-of-the-year lists in many subjects is Fimoculous.com. Seed Picks is also a good source.
  • NIH Public Policy compliance
        - Presentation 10-11 am, Jan. 29. Olin Library
        - If you are interested in this subject, you may be interested in this flowchart that outlines the process of demonstrating compliance with the NIH Policy: How to Demonstrate Compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.
        - Additional overview information is available at http://scholarlycommunications.wustl.edu/issues/nih/index.html.
        - Also Ruth is happy to assist you individually with specific information about journal and publisher policies and processes.
        - If you are interested in the future of this NIH PUBLIC ACCESS POLICY legislation you may want to read this Open Access News posting about a recent challenge from several publishers and professional societies. Professional societies signing this challenge include American Physiological Association, American Society for Plant Biology, Botanical Society of America and others. Peter Suber suggests:"Do you belong to one of the societies signing this letter? If so, let your leaders know internally and online that they are not speaking for the members and that they are putting the society's interests as a revenue-producing publisher ahead of its interests as a non-profit scholarly society dedicated to research."

  • Library subsidy of publication charges Public Library of Science discontinued in 2009: With regrets, we have dropped our institutional membership in PLoS. PLoS publication charges were formerly reduced by 20%. I sincerely hope WU authors will be able to continue to consider publishing in PLoS journals, such as, PLoS Biology, PLoS Genetics, PLoS ONE, etc. All PLoS articles will continue to be open access to all; that hasn't changed. At least for 2009, Becker Medical Library continues to be a supporter member of Biomed Central, which give WU authors a 15% discount on Article Processing Charges at BMC.
  • New teaching resources:
-- TeacherTube videos produced by students and teachers [seen on Discovering biology in a digital world where it is called "YouTube for teachers."]
-- Scitable online learning tool for undergraduates from Nature. Most content is currently focused on genetics. Introducing Scitable [Nascent blog]
-- How to Use an Article About Genetic Association, series of 3 articles in JAMA seem to me useful to basic scientists and students even though they are written for clinicians. They are "an introduction to clinicians wishing to read and critically appraise genetic association studies. We summarize the key concepts in genetics that clinicians must understand to review these studies, including the structure of DNA, transcription and translation, patterns of inheritance, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and linkage disequilibrium. We review the types of DNA variation, including single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), insertions, and deletions, and how these can affect protein function. We introduce the idea of genetic association for both single-candidate gene and genome-wide association studies, in which thousands of genetic variants are tested for association with disease. We use the APOE polymorphism and its association with dementia as a case study to demonstrate the concepts and introduce the terminology used in this field. The second and third articles will focus on issues of validity and applicability."
-- Journal of Cell Biology has now put their original images into the JCB Data Viewer Although this is intended to support research, I think teaching may find this a good tool also! More info
  • Lunchtime Bioinformatics Workshop Series - Mondays through May 4 - at Becker Medical Library: http://becker.wustl.edu/services/news/bioinfo-lunch-workshops.html. The announcement says School of Medicine but I checked. Interested people from Danforth Campus are welcome.
  • Interesting Reading: Steven Pinker in the New York Times reflects on his personal genome sequence: My Genome, My Self.
  • More print journal cancellations: Over the years, the biology library has kept several titles in print even when they are available dependably fulltext online and used primarily online. To save money on binding, subscriptions and shelf space, we will be canceling print even more aggressively in the future. Initially, we have begun with titles that are available in the JSTOR backfile archive with current issues online from other dependable sources. Print issues of JSTOR titles will no longer be bound and, in most cases, received for these titles: Evolution, Journal of Herpetology, Plant Cell, Plant Physiology, Taxon. Science is also a print subscription which has JSTOR archives; since there are several subscriptions on campus we are still negotiating as to whether one copy of print might be kept and where. We may continue to receive Science in print but we will no longer be binding it and will discard issues once they are available in JSTOR. If you have comments or questions about this plan, please discuss them with Ruth Lewis. In the biology library, we have been fairly diligent about moving to online-only, but we still have a few more titles where these cost-cutting policies will probably affect our collection, for example, the Trends in... and Current Opinions in... titles which are on ScienceDirect and a few others. I will let you know as these decisions are made.
