Searching tips

Finding dictionaries in the catalog: One of the most effective ways is to browse or search by subject headings. For example:

Finding articles from a citation
When you have a citation (or a partial one) and need to find the full journal article, try Citatation Linker. If the WU Libraries subscribe to the full text of that article online, you'll be linked to it. If we don't, you'll be given other options for acquiring it.

Catalog tips

  • Titles beginning with "An": When searching for a title that begins with the German preposition "an", type it twice (e.g. "an an die berlinerin" will bring up the work: An die Berlinerin). This is because our catalog system automatically disregards the English articles "the", "an", and "a". This is also the case for the preposition "a" in Romance languages.
  • Finding titles via keyword: If you can't find a title by perfoming a title search, ALWAYS do a KEYWORD search. We may actually have the title your're looking for as part of a larger work. And a KEYWORD search will often retrieve such titles.
  • ß and umlauts in the WU Catalog, MOBIUS catalog, and WorldCat: The character ß is changed to double-s in the catalog, so always use double-s when searching (e.g. "muß" becomes "muss"). Umlauts and other diacritics appear in these catalogs but you don't need to input them when searching (e.g. "uber" and "über" will both retrieve über).
  • What does IN PROCESS or IN TRANSIT mean in the WU Catalog and what do I do? To answer these questions and others about status messages, take a look at WU Libraries Catalog Status Messages.

If you're having trouble finding what you need, consult Brian by e-mail or phone (935-4824), or library staff at the Help Desk.
