Books on Visual Culture & Visual Literacy

The Domain of Images In the domain of visual images, those of fine art form a tiny minority. This book calls upon art historians to look beyond their traditional subjects - painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking - to the vast array of "nonart" images, including those from science, technology, commerce, medicine, music, and archaeology. Such images, James Elkins asserts, can be as rich and expressive as any canonical painting. Using scores of illustrations as examples, he proposes a radically new way of thinking about visual analysis, one that relies on an object's own internal sense of organization.

Exploring Visual Culture : definitions, concepts, contexts offers a view of visual culture that includes images, and other visual media and forms of expression, from architecture to fashion, design and the human body. Rampley adopts a cross-disciplinary perspective drawing on a wide range of examples from the last hundred years. Engaging in current debates about the uses and value of the study of visual culture it explores the limits of visual culture as an interdisciplinary field of study.

Visual Literacy: Writing about Art acquaints the student with the critical issues that shape the discipline of art and teaches them to write about art from a variety of scholarly and rhetorical perspectives. Includes tips on how to approach assignments such as the formal analysis of a work of art, the contextual analysis of a work of art, and an analysis of an exhibition.
