To provide the support, four steel piles (one shown in foreground) are placed seven feet apart, sunk two feet in bedrock, then secured with lattice work, and braced with a concrete wall. |

May 28, 2002--southeast corner outside Olin: After the drill hits shale, a different drill bit is used. The rock drilling bit, a hollow cylinder with teeth on the bottom edge, digs two feet of rock out of the hole. A worker sprays water into the bit to empty the rock and dirt brought up by the drill. |
