August 21, 2002--south of Olin: With an electric grinder, a glazier sands a steel brace that attaches to the superstructure and supports the glass grid comprising the walls of the atrium cap.

August 21, 2002--atrium roof: A glazier on the scaffolding takes measurements for the ground crew to cut the metal grid which will hold the glass panes. Glaziers use a lift to move the cut pieces to the roof.

August 21, 2002--north of Olin: Structural engineering plans for the upper floors specify seismic bracing on some columns in the stairwells. "Demo" spray painted on the pink granite wall indicates where the outside wall of the northeast stairwell will be demolished to access the stairway. A staggered demolition schedule avoids closing all the stairways at once during the seismic bracing work.

August 21, 2002--west of Olin: Angled steel brackets and steel plates will be welded onto the columns and then covered with new layers of block as part of the seismic bracing plans for Olin Library. Behind the granite façade of the outer wall on the southwest stairway is a wall of terracotta blocks and then a wall of concrete blocks.

August 21, 2002--south of Olin Library: While the outer layer of granite remains intact on Levels 2 and 3, the two inner layers of terra cotta and concrete blocks are demolished and dumped outside through the black trash chute on Level 1. A Bobcat excavator scoops up debris from the chute and carts it to a trash bin.
