Printing FAQ: Logging onto Library Computers
Q. How Do I log onto a Library Computer?
A. If you are a WU student, faculty or staff member you must logon with your temporary
password.
- Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to open the logon window. In the User Name box, type your WU ID number.
- Type the temporary password the Library created for this one-time use only -- The first letter of your last name, in upper case; the second letter of your last name, in lower case, AND your WU ID number. Then, press "Enter" or click on "OK".
- Change your password to one that you create. Use at least six characters, including each of the following categories: upper-case letters, lower-case letters, or numbers. Hint: Write down your password or memorize it.
- OR If you are a visitor (meaning you don't have a current WU ID), type "visitor" in each box.
- Don't forget to Log Off when you're finished!
Q.What if I forget my logon password?
A.Visit the nearest Library service desk. We will verify your status
and reset your password.
Library computers require a personal logon for use. The logon is your student or employee ID number. A temporary password has been created by the library. You will be prompted to change this password the first time you logon. Instructions for logging on and changing your temporary password are posted near all library computers and are available in this document.
NOTE: Your password is created by you. Library staff will not know your password. Your workstation password is also used for ILLiad and for off-campus access via the proxy server. Your password for My Catalog, to view your record and request or renew books, is on a different system. You can set both passwords to be the same to make it easier to remember - but you have to remember to change it on both systems; changing it in one place does not change it in the other.
Q. Why do I need to logon?
A. The logon serves several purposes. It allows you to access your
temporary storage space on the library server from any library computer. It also
connects to your Campus Card account in order to track printing charges.
Q. Does everyone need to logon?
A.
Yes. To use the computers in any of the Libraries, you must logon. Visitors to the
campus may use a visitor logon and password. Students who are not currently registered
for classes will need to log on as visitors.
Q. I haven't registered for classes yet. After I do so, how
long will it take until I can logon under my WU ID number rather than as a visitor?
A. It generally takes one to two weeks for the library to get updated
information from the Registrar.
Q. What is my WU ID number?
A.
Students, use the same ID number that you use for WebSTAC. Employees, use the ID
number found on your paystub. You may also ask for your ID number at the Olin Library
Help Desk (please present your photo ID) or at Human Resources.
Q. Why can't I use my Social Security Number?
A. In the summer of 2006, the libraries removed Social Security
Numbers from library systems. You must now use your WU ID number to logon to a
library workstation and to Find it! and to access My Catalog, the library proxy
server, and ILLiad. For more information, see
What's New: Logging in to Library Services.
Q. What do I do if I forget my password or have a problem logging on?
A. Visit or call (935-5410 or 935-5420) the Olin Library Help Desk
where a library staff member can reset your password.
Q. If I attempt to logon but am unsuccessful three times, will
I be kicked off the system?
A. There is no limit to the number of attempts when entering your password.
Q. Will my computer use be monitored?
A. The library will not track what you do on a library workstation.
Please see our policy on
confidentiality.
Q. Why do I need to log on to both the PC and the Print Release Station?
A.
The double log on is necessary to insure security and to make all the software and
hardware work together. The PC logon is the personal identifier that travels from
the PC to the printer. This allows users to see only their jobs instead of all
print jobs. It prevents users from inadvertently printing or deleting a job from someone else.
