Accounts

Network Logon

An individual network account is established for all students, faculty, and staff members at the beginning of each academic year.  The username for your account is your University ID Number/Employee Number.

An initial password is assigned to your account but must be changed the first time you use a library public computer.  Accounts are updated weekly to add any new students or employees.  If you have problems logging onto library public computers using your username and password, please visit the Olin Library Help Desk, Level 1, Olin Library.

Special accounts are created for library visitors and short term visiting scholars.  Services for these accounts are more restricted than individual accounts.  Additional information will be provided at the time a special account is issued.

Personal File Space

All individual network accounts have a limited amount of personal file space on a library file server.  This server is mapped as the Z: drive when patrons log onto the library network. Personal file space is for school-related material only. Any movies, music, programs, or other software stored here may be deleted at any time. This file storage is also backed up on a regular basis.

The University’s rules on the use of computing resources must be followed at all times when storing files on library servers.

Printing

Printing services are available from all public PCs in the libraries on a pay-as-you-go basis.  Payment may be made using your University vending/laundry/printing account (established through the WebStac system for students and through the HR Self-service system for faculty and staff) or by cash card.

Print charges are:

  • Monochrome, single sided --$0.08 per image

  • Monochrome, two-sided -- $0.12 per sheet ($.06 per image)

Proxy Server

To access most databases and ejournals from off-campus you must log in through the proxy server. You must be a current student, faculty, or staff member of Washington University for access to these resources.

Instructions for using the proxy server and the proxy server logon page can be found here.

Wireless Networking

The University Libraries provide access to the campus wireless network for students, faculty, staff, and long term visiting researchers.  Patrons can connect to the wireless network using either a secure, encrypted connection (WUFI-S) or an unencrypted connection (WUFI).  Because WUFI-S provides increased levels of security and additional features, this is the preferred access method.

Setting up Your Computer to Use the Wireless Network

WUFI-S -- Recommended; provides secure, encrypted access to all network resources.  Instructions for setting up your computer for WUFI-S can be found at WUFI-S instructions
.

WUFI -- Open access, not secure.  Protocols using clear text passwords are not permitted (Telnet, POP, SMTP, others).  Instructions for connecting to the wireless network using WUFI can be found at WUFI instructions

The Campus Wireless Network

The University began a transition to Meru Networks wireless technology in 2006.   While individual schools and departments provide wireless access points, the network itself is operated by Network Technology Services.

The University Libraries, along with many other areas, have been fully moved to the new Meru technology but other areas on campus may be using older Blue Socket technology for several months in the future.

The Meru technology provides several advantages over the older technology including support for a larger number of users, faster connections, and easier deployment.

Wireless Locations in The University Libraries

The University Libraries provide wireless access points in:

§  Olin Library (locations on all floors)

§  Whispers Café

§  Gaylord Music Library

§  The Biology Library

§  The East Asian Library

§  The Kranzberg Art and Architecture Library

§  The Kopolow Business Library

§  The West Campus Library

Wireless access is also provided by other schools or departments in

§  The Chemistry Library

§  The Earth and Planetary Sciences Library

 Wired Networking

Wired network ports are available in Olin Library and the Kranzberg Art & Architecture library for members of the campus community.  Network access on these ports requires authentication through one of the University’s Radius servers in a manner similar to that used for the wireless network.

How to Change Your Password

There are three ways to change your password for access to library public computers:

Method 1 – If you know your current password, you can use the Windows password change feature:

1.     Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.

2.     Select Change Password

3.     Enter your User name (this is your student number/University ID number)

4.     In Old Password field, type your current password

5.     In New Password field and in Confirm New Password field, type the new password that you want to use.  (See note below about password rules.)

6.     Click OK.

Method 2 – If you know your current password, you can also use the on-line form to change your password.  The format for entering your information is the same as in method 1.

Method 3 – If you have forgotten or lost your current password, you can visit the Olin Library Help Desk, Level 1, Olin Library.  The Help Desk staff can reset your password to a default structure.  You will then need to change your password using one of the two methods above the next time you logon.

Password Rules – Your password must be at least six characters in length and must use at least one character from each of the following three groups:  Upper case alphabetic characters (A – Z), lower case alphabetic characters (a – z), and numbers (0 – 9).

 Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the computers?

You should always log onto library public computers using your assigned user name and password. This will give you access to your printing account and your personal storage space on the servers. Your personal user ID is the same as your University ID/Student Number.  A default password is assigned to all users when their Windows account is established and must be changed the first time they logon to a library public computer. You should always log off when done to keep others from having access to your files.

A default visitor logon has been established for library patrons who are not members of the University community (students, faculty, and staff).  This logon does not have access to all resources on public computers, has no personal storage space, and cannot be used for printing from campus card accounts.

Are the computers safe from viruses?

All of the library public computers have anti-virus software installed and running.  In addition, they also have anti-spyware software installed.  Updates to this software are applied regularly.

If you attempt to load an infected file from removable storage media such as a USB device, the anti-virus software will attempt to clean the file.  If it is unable to do so, you may be prevented from opening the file.

Where can I save my files on the server?

All individual network accounts have a limited amount of personal file space on a library file server.  This server is mapped as the Z: drive when patrons log onto the library network. Personal file space is for school-related material only. Any movies, music, programs, or other software stored here may be deleted at any time. This file storage is also backed up on a regular basis.

The University’s rules on the use of computing resources must be followed at all times when storing files on library servers.

To get to access personal storage space from a library public computer:

1.      Log onto the network using your personal user name and password

2.      Open the My Computer icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen

3.      You will see a drive called Z:.

My computer crashed and I need to rebuild the hard drive.  Can I borrow a CD with my operating system?

No. Patrons must have their original operating system (Windows or Mac) CD and the accompanying certificate. The Library cannot lend CDs for installation on personal systems. This is a violation of the manufacturer’s license and copyright law.

What other equipment resources does the Library offer?

There are a limited number of notebook computers available in The Arc for checkout and use by patrons in Olin Library.
