Public Computers
General:
Access to all public computers in the University Libraries (this does not include the Medical Library, the Law Library, and the Social Work Library) is by individual authentication. This means that the public computers do not have an automatic logon when they are started. Authentication instructions are provided on the logon screen for each computer. Please see this FAQ for more information.
Public Computers are located on all levels of Olin Library and in each departmental library. Most of these computers offer Internet and e-mail access and a variety of other specialized software depending upon their location. Public computers are available to all library patrons whenever the Libraries are open. Washington University students, faculty, and staff have priority in using library public computers. Information on specialized software is available at the Olin Library Reference Desk, in the Arc: Library Technology Center, and in each departmental library. See also information about printing in the Libraries.
Catalog-only computers:
A limited number of public computers are restricted for use in accessing the library catalog. General Internet access is not available on these computers.
CD-ROM network:
A several general use, CD-ROM based software products are available on a small cluster of computers located near the Olin Library Help Desk. These systems are set up for accessing the CD products on the menus. Assistance in using these systems is available at the Olin Library Help Desk.
Arc: Library Technology Center
Located on Level A, the Arc houses many computers with word processing and spreadsheet software, and many other specialized applications. Please click on 'About the Arc' on the Arc homepage to view lists of hardware and software available in each area. You must be a current Washington University student, faculty, or staff member to use the Arc. A Washington University ID is required to enter the Arc.

Inside the front door of Olin Library is the entrance to the Café, which is open 24 hours/day during the academic year. As well as serving food and drink, there are 15 computers with Internet and email access, Word, the rest of the Microsoft Office suite, and several other applications.
Wireless Network
See also Wireless Network, which has links to access point status, setup instructions, and a problem report form.
As part of the University's wireless local area network, the Libraries provide wireless network access in many areas of Olin Library. Please see the maps on these pages: Level B, Level A, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. The wireless network is also available in most areas on the main floor and mezzanine of Gaylord Music Library, in the reading room of the East Asian Library, in most areas of the Biology Library, in the Kopolow Business Library, and the Kranzberg Art & Architecture Library.
Access to the wireless network requires authentication by one of the University's network servers. Instructions for obtaining the appropriate software and procedures for connecting to the wireless network can be found on the Network Technology Services web site. The wireless network is available only to students, faculty, and staff of Washington University. Members of the Washington University Medical School, Architecture, and central fiscal unit (CFU) departments should see this page for further info. It is not possible for you to print from your laptop to a printer in the Libraries while using the wireless network. Technical support and assistance for wireless networking is available from Residential Technology Services, Gregg Residence Hall Storefronts, 935-4688.
Ethernet Access (wired)
Standard network ports are provided at a number of tables, group study rooms, and other study locations in Olin Library where public computers are not available. To use these ports, you must provide your own computer, Ethernet network adapter (10 Mbps or 100 Mbps), and network cable (with an RJ-45 connector). The computer must be set up to use the TCP/IP protocol and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). No software is provided by the Libraries. It is not possible for you to print from your laptop to a printer in the Libraries while using the network ports.
