BERGEY SHIPS NINE WIND
PUMPING SYSTEMS TO INDONESIA

Bergey Windpower Co. (BWC) of Norman, Okla., said it has shipped nine 1.5-kW water-pumping wind electric turbine systems to Indonesia for irrigation projects. The units will be installed in East Nusa Tenggara, a province that includes several islands in the eastern half of the archipelago.

Company president Mike Bergey said the crops to be irrigated, in general, "are high value vegetables such as red onions." Added Bergey, "East Nusa Tenggara is very dry, and unlike western Indonesia, can only raise one rice crop per year from natural rainfall.

"Without water pumping for irrigation, the rice paddies are used for cattle grazing for eight months of the year. Many parts of the province have good groundwater resources, so a method of pumping water can improve farm productivity and raise rural income."

The packages include 5-kW backup diesel generators provided by Lister-Petter Diesel Generators, a British firm, Bergey said. The diesels "can also be used for other productive applications, such as agricultural processing," he added. Although the backup generators are designed for use when irrigation water is needed and when the wind is not blowing, "the number of hours [per year] when that will happen is very few."

The installations were financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). According to Bergey, "The Indonesians and JICA became interested in wind-powered water pumping following a USAID [U.S. Agency for International Development] pilot project in 1992." JICA is currently reviewing bids for another 15 wind turbines ranging from 3 kW to 10 kW in capacity, he said.

The East Nusa Tenggara systems, Bergey said, are "the first major wind installation in Eastern Indonesia," which he characterized as a "potentially enormous market." Wind energy development in the region, he said, has been hampered because wind maps originally indicated that wind speeds were too low for successful projects.

"That problem was overcome," Bergey said, "through two means. First, a pilot installation at Oeasao on the island of Timor in 1992 showed that the wind resource is actually good, especially in the dry season, when it is needed for pumping water. And second, NREL [the National Renewable Energy Laboratory] and Dennis Elliott [of the NREL staff] in particular analyzed the existing data and brought in new data sources such as ship and upper atmosphere data, and revised the wind resource maps."

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has authorized me to offer an electronic edition of its newsletter, _Wind Energy Weekly_, from which the above article is excerpted, at no cost.

For those of you who have not previously seen excerpts from back issues, the _Weekly_ reports on the outlook for renewable energy, energy-related environmental issues, and renewable energy legislation in addition to wind industry trade news. The electronic edition normally runs about 10kb in length.

The free electronic edition of the _Weekly_ is intended as an educational publication for those without a commercial interest in the wind energy industry. If your interest in wind is commercial in nature, please write to mailto:<windmail@mcimail.com> for more information about AWEA membership and publications.

If you would like a free electronic subscription, send me an e-mail request. Please include information on your position, organization, and reason for interest in the publication. ____________________________________________________________________________
